GM Disc Brake Conversion Kits
A disc brake conversion is bought platform first, and this page is sorted that way. Every kit below names its GM platform and years in its own listing - A-Body, F-Body, X-Body, B-Body and full-size Chevrolet cars, and GM full-size trucks - and only then splits by which end of the car it converts and how it is assisted. The page pulls together 24 in-stock disc brake conversion kits from Right Stuff Detailing and Leed Brakes, from $287.40 to $2,758.83: twelve front conversions, six rear conversions, five four-wheel conversions, and one spindle-and-bracket component kit that starts a conversion rather than completing one. Every rotor size, caliper piston count, finish and fitment quoted below comes from that product’s own listing. Every order over $200 ships free.
OUR GM DISC BRAKE CONVERSION PICKS
| Product | Spec (from the product listing) | Price | Why it is here |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disc Brake Conversion Rear w/Parking Brake | GM A-Body / F-Body / X-Body 1958-69, rear, 1-piston caliper, 11.00 in rotors, parking brake (per the product title), Right Stuff Detailing (per listing) | $724.50 | The rear pick, and the only rear kit on this page whose listing names a parking brake: the rear conversion A, F and X-Body cars ask for first, because the rear axle is where a conversion can quietly lose its parking brake. |
| Disc Brake Conversion Sp indle Mount A/F & X-Body | GM A-Body / F-Body / X-Body, front, 1-piston caliper, 11.000 in plain iron rotors, spindles included, Leed Brakes (per listing) | $744.99 | The front value pick: a spindle-mount front conversion that includes its spindles in the listing, for the A, F and X-Body cars that make up most of the drum-to-disc demand in this category. |
| 67-72 GM A-Body Disc Brake Conversion | GM A-Body 1967-72, front, power disc conversion, 1-piston caliper, 11.00 in rotors, black paint finish, Right Stuff Detailing (per listing) | $1,202.89 | The power front pick for the core Chevelle-era A-Body years: power assist and an 11.00 in rotor in the platform and year range most A-Body owners on this page are shopping. |
| 64-72 A Body 4 Wheel Disc Brake Conversion | GM A-Body 1964-72, 4-wheel power disc conversion, complete, 1-piston caliper, 11.00 in plain rotors, Right Stuff Detailing (per listing) | $1,439.70 | The whole-car pick: one complete four-wheel power conversion covering the full 1964-72 A-Body run, instead of a front kit now and a rear kit later. |
| 64 - 72 GM A-Body Disc Brake Conversion | GM A-Body 1964-72, Performance Series, 4-wheel power disc conversion, complete, 2-piston caliper, 11.00 in rotors, red powder coat, Right Stuff Detailing (per listing) | $2,758.83 | The ceiling of this page: the Performance Series four-wheel conversion with 2-piston calipers - the only 2-piston kit among the 24 - priced at the top because of how it is built. |
STEP ONE: PLATFORM AND YEARS DECIDE FITMENT
The platform shorthand alone does not settle fitment, and the listings on this page show why. A-Body appears here as 1959-64 (the Leed front kit), 1964-72 and 1967-72 - three different year ranges for three different kits, not one interchangeable A-Body fitment. F-Body splits into 1967-69 front and four-wheel kits and a 1975-81 Camaro rear kit. X-Body is covered by the 1962-67 front power kit and shares the Leed spindle-mount kit and the rear parking-brake kit with A and F-Body. The full-size cars have their own shelf: 1955-57 and 1959-64 front kits, a 1959-64 B-Body power kit, and a 1958-64 Bel Air rear kit. The trucks split by generation and lug count: 1963-66 and 1967-70 C10 front kits, a 1963-87 C10 rear kit, 1971-72 and 1973-87 front kits, and 1988-98 rear kits in 5-lug and 6-lug versions. Read the year range on the kit against your car before anything else - questions before you order? Call 213-549-4279 (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm PT) with your year, platform and axle and we will read the listing with you.
STEP TWO: FRONT, REAR, OR ALL FOUR
The twelve front conversions are the classic drum-to-disc swap: the front axle does most of a car’s braking work, so a front-only conversion is the normal first step and several of these cars left the factory with rear drums that owners keep. The six rear conversions finish the job or replace a rear drum setup on their own - they are platform and axle specific, and only one of the six, the Right Stuff rear kit in our picks, names a parking brake in its listing; the other five listings do not state a parking-brake provision, so ask before ordering if your car needs one. The five four-wheel conversions (the two A-Body complete kits in our picks, the 1967-69 F-Body complete kit, the 1968-74 F and X-Body kit, and the 1963-66 C10 front/rear kit) convert both ends in one matched purchase. And the one component kit - the Right Stuff mini kit at $287.40, the floor of this page - is spindles and backing plates / caliper brackets only, for A, F and X-Body 1964-72: it is the starting hardware for a conversion you are assembling yourself, not a brake kit, and it is labelled that way here rather than sold as one.
STEP THREE: POWER, AND THE ONE HYDROBOOST
Ten of the 24 listings carry power assist in their system name. Nine are listed as power disc conversions - front, rear-matched four-wheel, and the X-Body front kit among them - and one truck kit is listed as a hydroboost front conversion, which is assisted from the power steering system rather than engine vacuum; that distinction is definitional, and it is why that kit sits on its own line. One honesty limit applies to every power kit here: with a single exception, the listings state the system type and the hardware specs, but do not publish a contents list, so this page does not claim that any given power kit includes a booster or master cylinder in the box. The exception is the Leed Brakes B-Body kit, whose listing names a booster / master cylinder in its own spec - it is the only one of the 24 that does. Likewise, no listing on this page names a proportioning valve. If the contents decide your purchase, call us and we will confirm the box contents with the maker rather than guess.
AN HONEST NOTE ON ROTORS, SPINDLES AND WHEELS
Three things this page does not dress up. Rotors: every kit here lists plain or solid rotors - 11.00 in on most, 10.50 in on the Bel Air rear kit, 11.25 in on the Camaro rear kit and 11.53 in on the Leed C10 rear kit - and not one of the 24 listings states a drilled, slotted or cross-drilled rotor, so none is claimed; if you want a drilled or slotted setup, it is not on this page. Spindles: four of the truck front kits (both C10 generations in our selection, the 1973-87 power front kit and the hydroboost kit) list 2 in drop spindles, which lower the front of the truck as part of the conversion - a ride-height change, named here so it is not a surprise - while the Leed spindle-mount kit includes spindles at the fitment it lists, and the mini kit is spindles and brackets alone. Wheels: no listing on this page publishes a minimum wheel size, so this page makes no wheel-clearance claim for any kit. Measure your wheel and check with us or the maker before ordering - a conversion that does not clear your wheels is a return, not a brake upgrade.
QUESTIONS BUYERS ASK US
Front only, or should I do all four wheels? Front first is the normal conversion, because the front brakes do most of the stopping and the twelve front kits here cover every platform on the page. The four-wheel kits earn their price when the rear drums are worn, you are already replumbing the car, or you want one matched system front to rear - that is a condition and convenience decision, not a rule, and nobody here will tell you a front-only conversion is unfinished.
Will a conversion kit fit my stock wheels? The listings we carry do not state a minimum wheel size for any of these 24 kits, so we will not invent one. Rotor diameter is the starting point - most kits here run an 11.00 in rotor - but caliper clearance is the other half. Tell us your wheel size and we will check the kit against the maker’s guidance before you order.
Does a power conversion include the booster and master cylinder? Only where the listing says so. Of these 24, only the Leed Brakes B-Body kit names a booster / master cylinder in its own spec; the other power kits state the system type without a published contents list in the listing we carry. Ask us to confirm the contents for the exact kit before you buy - that is a phone call, not a guess.
Do I keep my parking brake with a rear conversion? Only one rear kit on this page - the Right Stuff rear kit in our picks, for A, F and X-Body 1958-69 - names a parking brake in its listing. The other five rear listings are silent on it, which is not the same as saying there is none; it means the listing does not say, and you should confirm the provision and cable arrangement for your axle before ordering.
What changes with the drop-spindle truck kits? The four truck front kits that list 2 in drop spindles convert the brakes and lower the front ride height by that listed amount in the same job. If your truck is already lowered, or you are matching an existing drop, that number is part of the fitment decision - the standard-height kits on this page are the ones whose listings do not name a drop spindle.
