Certified Fuel Cells (FIA & SFI Rated)
If your rulebook requires a rated fuel cell, the rating has to be stated for the exact cell you buy - a brand name alone is not a certification. This page pulls together the cells in our catalog whose own listings state a rating: 24 cells from ATL Fuel Cells, RCI, Schultz Racing Fuel Cells and Superior Fuel Cells, from $490.07 to $2,639.88 - ATL cells listed as FIA FT3 or FT3.5, and RCI, Schultz and Superior cells listed as SFI 28.3. Capacities run from 3 to 28 gallons. Every cell listed is in stock and ready to ship, and every order over $200 ships free.
OUR CERTIFIED FUEL CELL PICKS
| Cell | Rating (as stated in the product listing) | Key spec (from the product listing) | Price | Why it is here |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fuel Cell Wedged 18 Gal Black SFI 28.3 | SFI 28.3 (per listing) | 18 gal, wedge, 24.5 x 24.5 x 13 in, 10 AN outlet, foam, steel can | $490.07 | The floor of this page: RCI’s wedged 18-gallon circle-track cell is the lowest-priced cell here whose listing states a rating - SFI 28.3, printed right in its feature list - in a steel can with foam. |
| Fuel Cell 10 Gal Saver Cell FIA FT3 | FIA FT3 (FIA Approved per listing) | 10 gal, 23 x 12 x 9.75 in, 6 AN outlet / return / vent, foam, plastic | $822.99 | ATL’s Saver Cell line is the plastic-bodied FIA route: this 10-gallon cell’s listing states FIA Approved, with foam and 6 AN fittings all round, and it was our deepest-stocked ATL cell when this page was built. |
| Fuel Cell 15 Gal Sports Cell FIA FT3 | FIA FT3 (per title) | 15 gal, 24.5 x 17.75 x 9.5 in, two 8 AN outlets, 6 AN return / vent, foam, steel can | $1,135.99 | The steel-can ATL step: a Sports Cell in red powder coat with twin 8 AN outlets, sized at the 15-gallon point where a lot of road-race and track-day builds land. |
| Fuel Cell 22 Gal w/Foam SFI | SFI 28.3 (per listing) | 22 gal, wedge, 16.5 x 20.75 x 21.5 in, 10 AN outlet, 6 AN rollover valve, brackets included, steel can | $1,305.99 | Superior’s dirt late model / modified wedge: the listing names SFI 28.3, a rollover valve and mounting brackets in the box - the hardware details the cheaper cells leave you to source. |
| Fuel Cell 28 Gal Black Widow DLM FIA FT3 | FIA FT3 (FIA Approved per listing) | 28 gal, 24 x 21.25 x 21.13 in, 10 AN outlet, 8 AN return, 6 AN vent, foam, steel can | $1,889.02 | The top pick: ATL’s Black Widow dirt late model cell - 28 gallons, FIA Approved in its listing, wedge-shaped for a late model tail, in black powder coat. |
FIA FT3 OR SFI 28.3? YOUR RULEBOOK DECIDES
Two different rating systems appear on this page, and they are not interchangeable claims. The ATL cells are listed under the FIA system: most carry FIA FT3 in their titles, several listings state ‘FIA Approved’ in their feature lists, and the range tops out at an FIA FT3.5 assembly. The RCI, Schultz and Superior cells are listed as SFI 28.3 - in the RCI and Superior titles and feature lists, and in the Schultz Ultimate Series name. Which rating your car needs is set by your sanctioning body and your class, not by this page: check the current rulebook for the rating it names, then match it to a cell whose listing states that rating. If your class also sets expiration or re-certification requirements, settle those before you buy - call us at 213-549-4279 (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm PT) and ask about the specific unit you are looking at.
CAPACITY AND SHAPE: MEASURE THE SPACE FIRST
Every listing on this page prints the cell’s dimensions, so measure your mounting space before you fall for a capacity number. The small end is sprint and drag territory: ATL’s 3 and 5 gallon RaceCells (8 x 8 x 15 in and 10 x 10 x 17 in, plastic, foam) and Schultz’s 5 gallon Ultimate (13.25 x 13.25 x 9.25 in, steel). The middle is the Saver and Sports Cell ground - ATL Saver Cells are plastic-bodied (5 to 22 gallons), Sports Cells are steel cans (8 to 22 gallons) - plus round and flat shapes for tight spaces, like ATL’s 12 gallon Well Cell, a 22 in diameter round cell listed at 9.1 in tall. The big end is wedge country: RCI’s wedged circle-track cells (18 to 30 gallons), Superior’s dirt late model / modified wedges (16 to 30 gallons, brackets included per their listings), Schultz’s Ultimate wedges, and ATL’s Black Widow dirt late model cells. A wedge is not a styling choice - it is shaped for the tail of a circle-track car - so buy the shape your chassis was built around.
FOAM, CANS AND FITTINGS: READ THE FEATURE LIST
The listings here are specific, so read them literally. Foam: most cells on this page list foam in their features - the ATL, RCI and Superior cells do; the Schultz Ultimate listings shown here do not name foam in their feature lists, so if foam matters for your class, confirm it for the exact Schultz part number before ordering. Can and body: ATL Saver and RaceCells are plastic-bodied, ATL Sports Cells and the RCI, Schultz and Superior cells here are steel (several in powder coat), and the Schultz 24 gallon Northeast Modified cell is the aluminum exception on this page’s wider certified list. Fittings: outlet sizes run from 6 AN on the small ATL cells to 10 AN outlets on the RCI, Superior and Black Widow cells, with return and vent sizes printed per cell - match them to your pump and plumbing before the cell arrives, not after.
AN HONEST NOTE ON FUEL SAFE - AND ON CHEAPER CELLS
The slate for this page originally named Fuel Safe alongside ATL and RCI, so here is the straight answer: we stock Fuel Safe cells (their Race Safe, Enduro and Sportsman lines are in the wider collection linked below), but their product listings in our catalog do not state an FIA or SFI rating, so they are not on this certified page. The same goes for the sub-$200 poly and aluminum cells in the wider range - good cells for classes that do not require a rating, but their listings do not claim one. If your rulebook requires a rating, buy a cell whose listing states it, like the 24 above; if you are shopping a Fuel Safe cell for a class that accepts it, check the manufacturer’s data for that exact part number first, or call us and we will look at the listing with you.
QUESTIONS RACERS ASK US
Does an FIA FT3 cell satisfy a class that asks for SFI 28.3 - or the other way round? This page makes no such claim, and you should not assume it: they are ratings from different bodies, the listings state them separately, and only your sanctioning body’s current rulebook can tell you what it accepts. Match the rating in your rulebook to the rating stated in the cell’s listing.
Do certified cells expire? Certification and expiration requirements are part of racing tech inspection, and the wider Fuel Cell/Tanks collection copy says the same thing we say at the counter: if your class requires an FIA or SFI-rated cell, check the expiration requirements before you buy, and ask us about a specific unit’s dates. Do not buy a rated cell on the assumption that any date will pass - settle it for the exact part number first.
Is foam included? Where the listing says so: the ATL, RCI and Superior cells on this page list foam in their features. The Schultz Ultimate listings here do not name foam, and one thing this page will not do is upgrade a listing by implication - if foam is required for your class, verify it on the exact listing or ask us before ordering.
Can I install a fuel cell myself? The listings for these cells state that professional installation is recommended, and we echo that: a cell install is fuel plumbing, venting and mounting work in the part of the car you least want a leak. If you are planning the job, lay out the whole list first - cell, pump, lines, fittings in the AN sizes the listing prints, and mounting hardware (included with the Superior cells here, per their listings).
